This winter seems to be special, October was colder than normally, then it started to rain, in November here was flood alert. In Western Finland water in rivers and lakes flooded to fields. At the beginning of December we had some snow, it melted away. At Christmas night is was snowing, in the Boxing Day raining. The Year 2020 started without snow, temperature +3°C/ 39°F. Normally at this time we have snow enough to ski, temperature about -10°C/ 14°F. Very interesting to see the mid winter in February, skiing or swimming.
Great, no snow. Walk with me through the new year.
During these first months of a year we have blue moments after a sunset. Everything is blue, the sky, snow, air. Today the sun rose 9.41 and sets 15.26. It is cold now and birds sit up on birches trying to catch every possible sun beam for warming.
Light green birches mean here so much. Dark and cold winter is behind. Warm days and white nights are here.
The Midnight Sun only shines above the Arctic Circle, but nights are white all over the country. In the northern parts of Finnish Lapland, the sun stays above the horizon for over 70 consecutive days. In a municipality of Utsjoki, the sun rose 17.5 and the next sunset is 27.7. We live in the western Finland and here the sun sets just for a while and rises again.
