This July is among the rainiest Julys ever. Every day is raining. Autumn is already near. The light nights are over. In the northernmost part of Finland, in a village of Utsjoki, the sun has set for the first time since 16 May. The wind has a smell of snow, nightfrosts are here. Last night it was -3°C/ 25 °F. We still have life here. I was really surprised to see a ladybug in a sunflower bud. Sunflowers didn´t have time to open their buds. Migratory birds are just now leaving these areas.
The last butterflies were flying on 26.9. I noticed for the first time during this summer some red admirals in our Japanese hydrangea. This red admiral is quite big, a 45–50 mm (1.8–2.0 in) wingspan.
My husband is building a new house for a hedgehog. We help a hedgehog putting some dry hay inside the house and it can collect more if needed. It carries hay in it´s mouth and it is a huge work. The house is made waterproof. If it is warm days in winter and the snow is melting, water can´t get inside the house and wet a sleeping inhabitant and then freeze it when it is frost again. This house will be the third one under a huge pile of branches and dry leaves in a peaceful corner in our yard. My husband said that this easy to build and it is very important, because nowadays hedgehogs is very difficult to find a place for winter because of too clean gardens and yards.
This August has some days left. Our temperatures are like in October, today +13 °C/ 54°F. The wind blows straight from the North. Berries and apples are all soon ready to pick. We picked today all the redcurrants, black ones were not ripe enough. The leaves of cherry trees are turning yellow and falling down. Apples have already red cheeks.
Myrsky saapui tänään iltapäivällä Tanskan ja Ruotsin kautta Suomeen. Pohjoisessa sataa lunta, meillä vettä ja räntää.
Autokatokseen oli tuuli liimannut viimeisen lehden. Surullista.

The last leave was on a wall of a car tent. So sad.
Metso, Tetrao urogallus, on Suomen suurin metsäkanalintu. Koiraslintua kutsutaan ukkometsoksi, naarasta koppeloksi. Lintu on nykyään harvinainen. Olimme kovin onnellisia saadessamme nähdä komean linnun metsässämme.
